U-Haul has initiated numerous industry-first energy-efficient programs. To encourage reduction in fuel consumption, Fuel-Economy Gauges are installed in every new-production U-Haul truck, and have been retrofitted to existing trucks. A U-Haul exclusive, the fuel-economy gauge enables drivers to determine at a glance if they are maximizing their fuel efficiency based on vehicle speed, thus improving their eco-driving habits by real-time fuel-efficiency readings.

Sustainability Grants are allocated by the U-Haul Corporate Energy Management Team to increase energy efficiency. The Detroit area has 13 sites which feature energy-efficiency measures resulting in annual savings of approximately 452,622 kWh. These projects, which include installation of more-efficient lighting and HVAC equipment, have resulted in an estimated negation of 344 tons of carbon emissions for the metro Detroit area.
